Thank you for your interest in the International Federation for Psychotherapy. The IFP is an international federation of national, regional, and school-oriented psychotherapy societies

What were the origins of the IFP?

Historically, todays IFP evolved from the International General Medical Society for Psychotherapy (IGMSP) established in 1935 and then re-established as the International Federation for Medical Psychotherapy (IFMP) in 1954. The original objective of the federation was to promote psychotherapy within the field of medicine. However, in the mean time psychotherapy has come to include a wide field of professions both scientifically and in practice. Correspondingly, the objectives of the IFP have been extended and in 1991 the federation was renamed International Federation for Psychotherapy (IFP).

What is the purpose of the IFP?

The IFP is an international, interprofessional, cross-cultural federation. The IFP does not pursue profession-oriented politics; its goal is to facilitate international communication among the various schools, professions, and cultures that may be found within psychotherapy. The IFP encourages and supports development within psychotherapy corresponding to the specific needs and necessities of the various continents, regions, and cultures. This is mainly done in supporting the development of psychotherapy in practical application, teaching, and research; an important element is the exchange not only between the various psychotherapy schools and professions but especially between the various cultures. The IFP serves to encourage and support suitable standards in carrying out psychotherapy without renouncing cultural differences.

Who may apply for membership?

All psychotherapy societies may acquire membership. Precondition is that the training carried out by the society is generally accepted in that country. Individual membership is only possible in those cases where there is no member society in the respective country and in certain well-founded exceptions. Membership fees for the IFP correspond to the size of the member organizations. To acquire membership, a formal application must be sent to the Secretary General using the enclosed IFP forms. Temporary membership will be confirmed by the Secretary General. Final membership will be decided on by the Council of the IFP and will then be confirmend by the President of the IFP.
